In 2013 the Australian almond industry became the country’s most valuable horticultural export industry and the first Australian horticultural crop to have annual export sales in excess of $300 million. The industry has come a very long way in a short period of time. In the past decade: almond tonnage has increased from 11,743 tonnes to 73,361 tonnes; domestic consumption has doubled to 0.9 kg per person; and annual export sales have increased from $82 million to over $400 million.
The Australian almond industry’s success and global competitiveness is attributed to various factors: favourable climate for high production; an efficient mechanised production system; counter seasonal production; product versatility; and established and expanding export markets.
Increasing consumer demand is a key factor. Almonds have wonderful health attributes that are underpinning global consumption growth. Almonds are gluten free and a good source of protein, Vitamin E, dietary fibre and monounsaturated fat. Various scientific studies have shown the consumption of almonds has been associated with a reduction in cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory disease.
